Sewing machine!!!
I got one of the best Freecycle finds night before last – a Singer 457 Zig Zag model sewing machine IN A CABINET. (link goes to a picture of one I saw on Flickr)
Heather, the lovely woman who gave it to me, said that it had belonged to her great-aunt, who didn’t really sew, so they never could figure out why she had it! Then her mother got and it and had it serviced 2 years ago, and it has rarely been used since. It was apparently a 1968 model machine.
Heather recently finished grad school and bought herself a Bernina as a graduation present. She said she preferred the newer machines to the older ones, as she got spoiled by using her friend’s Bernina.
I, however, not being much of a seamstress, have a fondness for 60s and 70s models of Singer sewing machines. They hold up quite well over the years. The Singers of today are not “true” Singers – the company actually went under and another company bought it out and is manufacturing under the Singer name, but the quality is not there.
Haven’t tried it out yet, but hoping to spend at least a few minutes tonight testing it out. I’ll keep you posted.
